As summer approaches and the weather becomes warmer, the YCIS Chongqing Noteworthy Singers Children’s Choir was invited to perform on Saturday, May 20 at Guanyinqiao Pedestrian Street, to represent YCIS in the First Portuguese Carnival of Chongqing!
The Noteworthy Singers consists of 22 students ranging from Year 3 to Year 7, who come from all across the globe. Performing in public is a perfect opportunity not only to practice students’ music skills but also to build students’ confidence in front of big audience. Although they have already had several performances across Chongqing, they still didn’t know any Portuguese songs before the event..
The rehearsal started a couple weeks before the festival. Learning the Brazilian bossa nova The Girl from Ipanema, and other international songs that included the Potuguese language was conducted, and luckily, the school wide concert Yanomamo held back in March was helpful because many of the songs reflected Amazon rainforest in Brazil, which were perfect for this performance!
On the day of the show, the colorful canopy featured wine and products from many Portuguese speaking countries. The large stage was in the shape of a giant ship like the ones Portuguese would have used to explore the world. Even during the short sound check, large crowds gathered to see what these well dress international students were up to. Once the children began to sing, the audience was captivated and responded with enthusiastic applause.
It’s been a fruitful year for the YCIS Noteworthy Singers and there will be more performances to look forward to next year. Thank you to all the students and parents who have put in so much effort to make our music events possible. See you next year!
