    • In the Year 6 Learning Community, we started our first topic ‘Creative Minds’ in the beginning of the school year. Focused on Leonardo da Vinci and Amadeus Mozart, students explored the concept of creativity in this truly cross curricular study unit. Activities in writing, topic, P4C and other lessons were used thematically to explore the learning outcomes planned into this unit of work.

Computer programming in Scratch created stories about these two historical figures. Students painted the Mona Lisa in Art and created their own designs for porcelain plates in Chinese Studies. Also, the Vitruvian Man pictures were drawn in Mathematics lessons using knowledge and skills related to scale. Green screen technology was used to create a news broadcast about the theft of the Mona Lisa.

A visit to the 3D Art Museum in Nan’an provided a good opportunity to develop concepts further. Finally, the topic culminated in a showcasing of learning to an audience including parents. This consisted of an assembly presentation and then a closer look at work in the Year 6 learning community.

Well done Year 6! See you all in our next topic study of ‘Human Rights and Opportunities’!
