Outdoor living skills have become increasingly important in today’s world. People who live in big cities often seek to escape modern life, stepping out of their comfort zones for a closer connection to nature.
Our Year 7-8 students went on a Lakeside Adventure trip to Kunming, where they learned vital outdoor living and survival skills over five days in early November. For some, it was their first overnight excursion without parents, providing invaluable experiences that have them eagerly anticipating next year’s adventure.
Respecting and embracing different nationalities and their cultures is a core value at YCIS, integrated into our daily teaching and learning. The recent Year 9-10 Guizhou trip exemplified how we practice this mission in our educational approach.
Students immersed themselves in the diverse cultures of the Miao and Dong ethnic groups in Guizhou province, experiencing various customs and traditions. Camping in a large cave was both exciting and unforgettable, as the Miao people welcomed us with songs, drinks, and a wonderful dinner.
Developing rice paddies and harvesting sweet potatoes in a Dong village was challenging but rewarding. Students found themselves far removed from the urban reality of Chongqing, immersed in rural life. The tug-of-war between the young Dong children and YCIS students was the highlight of the trip, and the final singing party with the Dong people marked a wonderful conclusion to the experience!
The faces and places we encounter will stay with our students, encouraging them to appreciate the significance of Miao and Dong villages. In a rapidly developing world, these communities face challenges that could threaten their unique cultures. It is important to support the preservation of their traditions so that future generations can continue to learn from their rich heritage.
