What Would You Do for Planet Earth?
On Friday March 29, YCIS Chongqing hosted the annual Science Fair. This event showcased an array of fantastic scientific projects, models and demonstrations from our budding scientists from Year 6 upwards to Year 12.
After somewhat of a makeover this year, science fair focused on the theme of sustainability. Students were asked to consider ‘What would you do for Planet Earth?’ and create a project which would reflect the growing need for society to use science to promote sustainable development.
To support the school’s aim in becoming more environmentally conscious, students were also tasked with creating an online platform for their projects, instead of creating a conventional single-use board. These provided an opportunity for the whole school community and guests to view students’ projects prior to the fair and created fantastic conversation starters and energy on the day.In acknowledgment of their work, students were awarded prizes in the following categories:
- 1st and 2nd place in each year;
- Environmental Innovation;
- Scientific Communication;
- Best Demonstration;
- People Choice Award;
- School Champion.
We are pleased to announce the overall school champions for this year’s Science Fair are Sunny Choi and Kristina Lee, for their project ‘How does the type of fruit peel affect the water retaining ability of a superabsorbent polymer?’ We are also pleased to announce People’s Choice Award goes to Amy Jung, Yiwen Xu and Yula Jiang for their project ‘Microorganisms: Are they Vital for Plants.’ Congratulations to all winners.
On behalf of the whole science team at YCIS Chongqing, we would like to thank all who attended, we hope you had an enjoyable experience. A special mention in particular to the Technology Department and the Supporting Division for all of their support in the run up to the event.
Until next year, go science!
