Introduction
World Classroom is a practical expression of Yew Chung's vision of preparing young people to participate effectively in the new global society, a world characterized by cross-cultural interaction, dynamic change and global interdependence. The World Classroom programme offers students an opportunity to increase their awareness and understanding of another culture, promote critical thinking, and develop an appreciation of other points of view. The program helps to prepare our students to become productive citizens by developing their cross-cultural knowledge, skills, and attitudes to become true global citizens.
Dr. Betty Chan, Director of the Yew Chung Education Foundation, developed a concept of the World Classroom in the 1990s. By 2000, the first World Classroom programme was implemented in the Yew Chung International School - Hong Kong. After years of experience, growth and change, the World Classroom is now an established part of the curriculum of all Yew Chung International Schools.
Concept
World Classroom is a concept of learning beyond the walls of the classroom. It is an extension of experiential, project-based learning for which Yew Chung has become known from Early Childhood through Primary and Secondary education. It has its roots in Yew Chung's philosophy and mission to prepare Yew Chung students to be lifelong learners, to understand the richness and diversity of Eastern and Western history and cultural traditions, and to be responsible world citizens with a commitment to serve family, society and community.
World Classroom is primarily an educational experience allowing students to experience first hand major cultures of the world - Asian, European, African, Middle Eastern, Hispanic, Anglo-American. Students by year group will focus on a different world culture each year, to study consecutively at least four world cultures in the World Classroom. By studying and then confronting these cultures in real life situations in countries and cities within the specific cultural region, Yew Chung students will experience personal growth and understanding that links to character formation in the shaping of a global citizen.
Participation
World Classroom trips are open to any full-time Yew Chung International School student from Years 7, 8, 9, or 10. Registration will be held for different year groups throughout the year. As space on each trip is limited, it is important to make certain that students and parents meet all deadlines in getting their applications completed and their documents submitted. Approval of applications will depend upon a number of factors, including the student's motivation, attitude, scholastic record, medical history, and behavior.
As part of a World Classroom group, students will be given thorough briefings by the teacher coordinators, including an introduction to the country, usually by a consular official. During the trip, students will need to complete activity books related to the places they are visiting as well as a daily journal. Following their trip, students will be asked to share their experiences in a school assembly, a bulletin board display, or a newspaper essay. Students' performance during the trip will be evaluated according to their behavior, their attitude, and their overall contribution to the group. For latest itinerary of World Classroom trips, please click here for details.
